GEO: be the one AI recommends — when the customer asks “who should I choose”
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), also known as SEO for LLMs, is the work a business does to appear in the answers of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. UpCommerce offers it in a way few can: it measures it with Epoptes, its own GEO monitoring platform, before and after every change — on your site and on its own. For every business in Greece whose customer asks the AI first.
What GEO is
There is no page 2: either it names you or you do not exist
On Google the customer sees ten results and chooses. On ChatGPT they see one answer with two or three suggestions — and choose from those. SEO got you onto the list; GEO gets you into the answer. It is the same discipline with new requirements, not something magical.
The models now answer with web search. They read what Google reads — but keep only what they can quote as an answer, with a name and a reason.
Without good SEO there is no GEO. Pages that are not indexed, a site without a sitemap, copy that does not say what you do — invisible in both.
Text that answers the question directly. Structured data that states who you are and what you offer. And confirmation from sources outside your site, because the model does not believe you on your own words alone.
How the models choose whom to recommend: three pillars
The model must be able to find you and read you: accessible pages, sitemap, llms.txt, no content hidden in images or JavaScript. It is the precondition — and where few businesses actually get stuck.
This is where most lose. The site says “innovative solutions” and the customer asks “who does X in Thessaloniki”. If the term of the question is not on your page in the customer’s words, the model does not connect you to it — however good you are.
Industry directories, reviews, articles, interviews, LinkedIn, mentions by partners. The models quote sources they consider independent — and in Greece, for B2B services, they systematically read Clutch, Sortlist and The Manifest.
In our measurements, the businesses that do not appear almost always have a decent site. What is missing is the connection to the wording of the question and the confirmation from outside. Both can be fixed — measurably.
What we do on the site
The practices we apply — on our own 37 pages too
None of this is secret. The difference is whether it is done consistently on every page and measured afterwards.
The category term, in the customer’s words
In the title, the heading, the first paragraph. Not “digital presence solutions” but “website development”. The most frequent finding of our measurements is pages that nowhere contain the phrase they want to appear for.
The answer paragraph
Right after the heading, two to four sentences that answer the question on their own: who, what, for whom, where. Written so that a model can quote them without the rest of the page. Normal text, not an image, not hidden in an accordion.
Questions as headings, and an FAQ
Sections answer questions customers actually ask. The FAQ at the end has FAQPage structured data with text identical word for word to the visible one — otherwise it does not count and can cost you.
Structured data that states who you are
Organization, Service with a catalogue of services, Person for the people with names, WebPage with breadcrumb — all linked with stable identifiers, so every page tells the model “this service, of this company, of this person”. Never self-rating with Review or AggregateRating.
Internal links and llms.txt
Every service page receives links from related articles and pages — isolated pages do not get quoted. And an llms.txt file at the root that tells the models what the site is and where everything is.
In the language it is asked
The Greek customer asks in Greek, in their own wording — not a translation of the English. Every language needs its own version with hreflang, written the way the question is asked in that market.
What we do off the site: the sources the models read
The directory has to address your profession, otherwise the model gets no clear signal. We always give two options: one free and one paid with wider reach, and we say which is which.
Google, Clutch, sector platforms. Not “excellent collaboration” but what happened and what changed — that can be quoted.
Same name, same description, same city, same services on the site, LinkedIn, directories, Google Business. Inconsistencies confuse the models as much as they confuse people.
Articles, podcasts, conferences, partnerships with a link to your page. It is the part that takes the longest — and the one nobody can copy.
The measurement
Epoptes: GEO is measured every month, otherwise it is an opinion
Epoptes is the UpCommerce group’s GEO monitoring platform — the first in Greece. You do not have to log in anywhere: it writes the questions, runs them, and sends you the report.
Written the way your customer asks, in the language of your market. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini with search enabled — what the customer sees, not what the model remembers.
Measured separately, because they are a different surface with different sources. You see which pages Google reads in order to answer.
Who appears where you are missing, and three specific actions for the next month — checked by code so they never propose something you already have.
Measurement alone is a €19-a-month subscription at epoptes.gr — without us. The work on the site and off it is the service on this page.
Our own example
We measure it on ourselves first
Numbers from the monthly Epoptes report for UpCommerce itself. They show where we are today, not a guarantee for anyone — not even for us next month. That is the point of monthly measurement.
Website development
If the current site cannot take the changes: a new site or e-shop with GEO built in from the first page.
Development →AI Implementation
The technical side: structured data, llms.txt, FAQ, content automation with rules.
AI implementation →SEO & Copywriting
The base of GEO: copy that answers and technical SEO, as standalone services.
Additional services →AI Consulting
Where AI pays off in your own business — from John Kiskipelis, separately.
AI consulting →Digital Marketing Agency
Google, Meta, Skroutz, social, email: the demand GEO creates also needs channels to work it.
The agency →Athens & Thessaloniki
Ask ChatGPT about your sector first. Then ask us.
In the 30-minute intro call we run two or three questions your customer asks and see whom the AI recommends today. From there we tell you what is missing — on the site or off it — and whether to start with measurement only or with work.
Frequently asked questions about GEO
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
The work a business does to appear and be recommended in the answers of artificial intelligence models — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode — when someone asks about its product or service. It is also called SEO for LLMs or AI SEO. It covers how the site is written and structured, and what third-party sources that the models read say about the business.
How is GEO different from SEO?
On Google there is a page 2; in an AI answer there is not. The model names two or three options and the customer picks from those. SEO remains the base, because models with search read the same results — but GEO adds what is needed to be quoted: text that answers directly, structured data that states who you are, and confirmation from sources outside your own site.
How do you measure whether I appear in AI answers?
With Epoptes, the group’s GEO monitoring platform. It writes eight questions the way a customer of yours would ask them, in the language of your market, runs them on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini with search enabled, checks Google AI Overviews and AI Mode separately, and produces a presence percentage, which competitors appear instead of you, and what to change. Every month, so you see the change — not once.
How long until GEO shows results?
Changes on the site are read by the models with search within weeks; a stable presence in the answers usually takes two to three months, and third-party mentions take longer still. That is why measurement is monthly: the first report shows where you start, the following ones show the trend.
Can you guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend me?
No — and anyone who guarantees it is lying. The models change, answers vary with the wording, and nobody outside the companies that build them controls what they say. What we guarantee is that we do the work that demonstrably matters, measure it the same way every month, and show you what changed. We measure our own site publicly by the same rule.
How much does GEO cost?
Measurement on its own, through Epoptes, is a subscription of €19 a month and does not need us. The work on the site and off it is priced per project, depending on how many pages, languages and sources are involved — you get a written proposal after the intro call. In many cases the first step is small: three service pages written properly change the picture.
Is GEO only for e-shops?
No. It concerns every business whose customer may “ask the AI” before choosing: doctors and clinics, lawyers and accountants, hotels, technical companies, schools, agencies, and of course e-shops. Our first measurements showed that most businesses in Greece start very low — and that in sectors with little GEO competition the climb is fast.
Do I need a new website to do GEO?
Usually not. Most of it is done on the existing one: copy, page structure, structured data, FAQ, llms.txt, internal links. A new site is needed only when the current one does not allow these changes or is so slow and closed that the models cannot read it — and then we tell you plainly.
